Operational management can help wholesale and retail companies address losses due to “shrink”, a known problem, that is growing, caused by the increase in theft in retail environments, bad stocking decisions, and general inefficiencies. While shrink is often used as another word for “retail theft”, there is much more to it. With the floating numbers like “$68.9 billion of goods is stolen from retailers each year”, and “In 2022, NRF estimates that shrink reached $112.1 billion in losses, up from $93.9 billion in 2021” (RetailDive, 2023) shrink has a great impact on the retail industry. “A deeper issue with ORC is simply that no one, not even the retailers, has a good sense for the actual size of the problem.” (Trevor Wagener, Chief Economist, Computer & Communications Industry Association). So, all these estimates, including the breakdown of losses assigned to External theft (36%), Employee theft (29%), and Process errors (27%) illustrate the issues that can be reduced at least by a third, if internal processes are addressed, and probably at least by half, if better checkout and security systems are implemented along with operational improvements. #retaildive #retailshrink #operations #processerrors https://lnkd.in/gPmGFfes

The current tech isn't there yet, but I think the retailers will get back to the #JustWalkOut in other retail stores eventually. This new tech will need to address the rising issue with retail theft and not only the frictionless convenience of making a purchase. #retail #amazon #retailtheft
New 🛒 🍌: Amazon's high-tech checkout system, Just Walk Out, has been a key part of its push into grocery stores. Not anymore. The company's top grocery executive, SVP Tony Hoggett, told me he's dropping the tech from new Amazon Fresh stores and removing it from many existing ones in favor of smart shopping carts. Hoggett says Just Walk Out, which uses cameras and sensors to track what people buy, makes more sense for smaller stores where people are grabbing a handful of items. In larger stores, budget-conscious shoppers want to know what they're spending in real time instead of being charged after they leave the store. Just Walk Out will still feature in some smaller Fresh stores and in Amazon Go stores. Amazon has also made progress selling the technology to outside retailers like convenience stores in airports and concession stands in arenas. But dropping Just Walk Out from larger stores is a major change, as Amazon had previously tried to pitch big retailers like Woolworths on the technology and even weighed opening its own big-box stores equipped with it. Think back to Amazon's humble beginnings selling books. They revolutionized retail and distribution with their groundbreaking e-commerce strategy. Wholesalers, here's your cue: use customer-centricity approach from user-friendly check-out experience to hassle-free returns. We love chocolate. However, when one goes shopping for a box of chocolate, usually as a gift (because who would buy a box of chocolate for themselves?) they would always have a few brands in mind, and if/when they at the point of making a decision, may consider an alternative with a fancier packaging, cheaper pricing or some other selling proposition like "Made in Canada" if it's strategically placed in good visibility. And that would also be at the eye level. And never ever have I looked at the bottom shelf when buying a box of chocolate. Recently I noticed that some brands are being placed so low that no customer would ever notice or consider purchasing such brand of chocolate. Retailers don't care. They will always push more famous and faster moving products by placing them where customers can see and buy them. So every small brand has to fend for themselves and make sure there are placement standards for their products not to disappear in Oblivion. N1. Determine placement standards. N2. Work on the strategy to achieve them. #chocolate #productplacement #merchandising #posmarketing #fmcg #consumerpackagedgoods

“Whether it’s on social media or on ecommerce platforms, the customer journey must be simple, easy, and give the consumer confidence — their trust is fragile,” said Amy McNeece, senior vice president of digital consumer partnerships for Chubb in North America.

They didn’t just stick with the usual lowering prices; they changed the game with their unique membership model and smart use of tech to keep track of inventory and improve help for customers. This tells us something important: innovation is not just a nice-to-have, it's a must-have. As we keep moving deeper into the digital era, let’s take a leaf out of Costco's book. Let's try new things, and look for competitive edge in distribution. The digital revolution is here, bringing loads of chances for those ready to embrace change.
