'Simcoe Day' was established in Simcoe's honour by Toronto City council in 1869, and eventually became a Canada-wide holiday, known as a "Civic Holiday". The first LT Governor of 'Upper Canada' (Ontario), he was known for supporting road and building infrastructure in the area, and named Simcoe County & Lake Simcoe for his father. He passed the Act Against Slavery in 1793, 40 years before it was fully abolished.
